Cross docking containers

For the temporary storage of hazardous substances, KOK Environmental Storage Systems builds cross-docking containers in accordance with PGS 15. Functionally, a horse stall is a shelving container without doors and without a roof. Previously, the “cross-docking” container was referred to as a “horse stall”.

A characteristic feature of cross-docking container dimensions is the free height of at least 50 cm above the packaging and the side walls that extend 50 cm beyond the packaging.

Cross-docking containers are custom-built for all common pallet and IBC sizes. If the desired dimensions are too large for transport, the cross-docking container is built in sections and then assembled on-site.

The platforms can be fitted with steel grid floors, so that non-standard packaging can also be placed.

Cross-docking containers are fitted with spill containment trays. The contents are determined by the volume stored in the container. Depending on the substances being stored, spill containment trays are available in Zincor, powder-coated steel, stainless steel, or high-density polyethylene (HDPE).

Cross docking containers with KOK Milieuopslagsystemen

KOK Milieuopslagsystemen develops cross-docking containers for the safe temporary storage of hazardous substances during transhipment and transport. The design is tailored to the packaging, volumes and PGS 15 requirements that apply to your situation. This ensures the logistics process remains efficient, without compromising on safety and environmental protection.

What is cross docking?

Cross-docking is a logistics process in which goods are temporarily received, sorted or prepared and then forwarded on to the next transport. In the case of hazardous substances, this requires a safe temporary storage facility. A cross-docking container helps to store packaged hazardous substances responsibly during this transhipment phase.

What is the definition of cross-docking for hazardous materials?

In the case of hazardous substances, cross-docking means that packaged substances are stored temporarily prior to or following transport. Therefore, it does not involve long-term storage, but rather a safe intermediate step in the logistics chain. Specific requirements from PGS 15 apply to this temporary storage.

What is a cross-docking container?

A cross docking container is a storage facility for the temporary storage of packaged dangerous substances within the transport chain. The container is intended for situations where substances are stored briefly before being transported further. KOK Milieuopslagsystemen builds custom cross docking containers, tailored to the packaging, quantities and safety regulations.

When do I need a cross-docking container?

A cross-docking container is required when hazardous substances are temporarily stored during transhipment, distribution or transport preparation. Think of pallets, IBCs or other packaged substances that are briefly staged for onward transport. The container ensures safe, well-organised and PGS 15-compliant temporary storage.

Does a cross-docking container fall under PGS 15?

Yes, cross-docking containers for hazardous substances are designed in accordance with the requirements from PGS 15 for temporary storage. Exactly which requirements apply depends on the substances, quantities, packaging, location and working method. Therefore, it is important to assess the situation thoroughly in advance.

What is the difference between a cross docking container and a regular storage container?

A standard storage container is usually intended for long-term storage. A cross-docking container, on the other hand, is intended for temporary storage within the transport chain. The focus is on safely receiving, temporarily placing and quickly moving packaged hazardous materials back out. A cross-docking container is a rack container without doors and without a roof.

What is the difference between a cross-dock container and a horse box?

That is the same. The term horse box was used in the PGS 15 versions up to 2021. After that, the designation temporary storage or cross docking appeared in the PGS 15. Functionally, it is a rack container without doors and without a roof. This design is intended for the temporary storage and transhipment of packaged dangerous substances.

Which packaging types is a cross docking container suitable for?

A cross-docking container can be built for various types of packaging, such as pallets, IBCs, drums and non-standard packaging formats. The dimensions and layout are tailored to what needs to be stored. Steel grid floors are also an option, enabling non-standard packaging to be placed safely.

Can a cross-docking container be custom-built?

Yes, cross-docking containers are custom-built. The dimensions, racking, product containment and material selection are tailored to the substances and packaging you wish to store temporarily. If the desired dimensions are too large for transport, the container can be built in parts and assembled on site.

Does a cross-docking container need a spill pallet?

Yes, during temporary storage of hazardous or environmentally harmful substances, secondary containment is important. A bund prevents leaks from entering the soil or surrounding environment. The required capacity of the bund depends on the volume stored in the container.

What materials are possible for the drip tray?

The correct choice of material depends on the substances being stored. Sump pallets can, for example, be made of Zincor-plated steel, powder-coated steel, stainless steel or HDPE. In this way, the containment system is tailored to the chemical properties of the stored products.

What does the internal height mean for a cross-docking container?

When cross-docking containers, dimensions are important for safe use. A characteristic feature is that there is sufficient clearance above the packages. In addition, the side walls extend beyond the packages. This contributes to a safe and practical temporary storage facility.

Can a cross-docking container be placed outside?

Yes, a cross-docking container can also be placed outside. However, the location, accessibility, surface, distances, product containment and the substances being temporarily stored must be assessed in advance. The final design must be suited to the risks and applicable regulations.

What data is needed to determine a suitable cross-docking container?

For sound advice, factors such as the type of substances, hazard classification, quantities, packaging, required capacity, location and logistical procedure are important. Based on these, KOK Milieuopslagsystemen can determine the required dimensions, product containment and design.

Can KOK Milieuopslagsystemen advise on temporary storage according to PGS 15?

Yes, KOK Milieuopslagsystemen thinks along to find the right solution for the temporary storage of hazardous substances. This involves looking at the substances, volumes, packaging, placement and practical working methods. This results in a cross-docking container that is safe, usable and appropriate for the situation.
